The Doberman Pinscher

Desert Harbor Doberman Rescue

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/doberman.htm

This is a breed of relatively recent origin. It was developed in Germany in the 1860s, presumably by crossing among the old shorthaired shepherds, German PinschersRottweilersBeaucerons,Manchester Terriers and Greyhounds. The creator of this mixture was a German tax collector named Louis Dobermann. Dobermann had to travel frequently through bandit-infested areas, and decided to develop a watchdog and bodyguard capable of handling any situation that might arise. The breed is named after its originator (shortened by one n). The Doberman was first presented at a dog show in 1876. It was immediately a big success. The Doberman was first recognized by the AKC in 1908. Doberman Pinschers have many talents including tracking, watchdog, guarding, police work, military work, search and rescue, therapy work, competitive obedience and Schutzhund.

Kasel Dog Treat Recall Expands

Kasel Dog Treats Recall Expands to Include More Products and Retailers

February 21, 2013 – The Food and Drug Administration has today announced that Kasel Associated Industries is expanding its recent recall to include other products and retail sales sources.
Caution SignKasel has already issued previous recall notices for specific products manufactured between April 20 and September 19, 2012 due to potential contamination with Salmonella bacteria.
According to the FDA…
The move comes after the Colorado Department of Agriculture tested a retail sample of a Kasel pet treat product and found it to be positive for Salmonella
In a follow-up inspection at the firm, the FDA found that all of the finished pet treat product samples and 48 out of 87 environmental samples collected tested positive for Salmonella.
More than ten different species of Salmonella were found in both the firm’s products and manufacturing facility, indicating multiple sources of contamination.
While there are no reports of human illness, FDA has received a small number of complaints of illness in dogs who were exposed to the treats.
Because of the multiple positive tests for Salmonella as well as the production practices and conditions observed at the facility during the inspection, the FDA has concluded…
“…there is a reasonable probability that pet treat products manufactured in the facility from April 20, 2012 through September 19, 2012 are contaminated with Salmonella.”

Where Were the Products Sold?

The Kasel-manufactured products are sold at various retailers including…
  • Target
  • Petco
  • Sam’s Club
  • Costco
  • Menards
Most of the products have a two-year shelf life.
All of the products were made in the U.S. This action is not related to FDA’s ongoing investigation of jerky pet treats made in China.

The Jack Russell Terrier

AZ Jack Russell Rescue, Inc.

http://www.azjackrescue.org

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/jackrussellterrier.htm

The Jack Russell Terrier is a cheerful, merry, devoted and loving dog. It is spirited and obedient, yet absolutely fearless. Careful and amusing, he enjoys games and playing with toys. Stable Jacks are friendly and generally kind to children. Children should be taught not to tease or hit the dog. They are intelligent, and if you let them take an inch, they can become willful and determined to take a mile. It is paramount that you are this dog’s pack leader. He needs to be given rules to follow, and limitations as to what he is and is not allowed to do. Do not let this little dog fall intoSmall Dog Syndrome, where he believes he is pack leader to all humans. This is where varying degrees of behavior problems will arise, including, but not limited to guarding, snapping, separation anxiety, and obsessive barking. They are highly trainable and able to perform impressive tricks. They have been used on TV and in the movies. However, if you do not show authority toward the dog, it can be difficult to train. This breed needs a firm, experienced trainer. Jacks that have been allowed to take over can be aggressive with other dogs. Some have killed or been killed in dog fights. Be sure to socialize the Jack. It has strong hunting instincts (stronger than your average terrier) and should not be trusted with other small animals. This hunting dog likes to chase, explore, bark and dig. Only let it off lead if it is well trained or in a safe area. Will get restless and destructive if it does not receive enough exercise and activities to occupy its keen mind. Jack Russells climb, which means they can climb over a fence; they also jump. A Jack that stands 12 inches high can easily jump five feet. JRTs are not the breed for an inexperienced dog owner. The owner needs to be as strong-willed as the dog is, or this little guy will take over.  With the right owner the Jack can really excel, but is not recommended for those who do not understand what it means to be a dog’s true pack leader. Jacks that are mentally stable, with all of their canine instincts met, will not display these negative behaviors. They are not traits of the Jack Russell, but rather human brought-on behaviors, which are a result of inefficient leadership, along with a lack of mental and physical stimulation. They will thrive with a job to do. The Jack Russell Terrier must present a lively, active and alert appearance. It should impress with its fearless and happy disposition. It should be remembered that the Jack Russell is a working terrier and should retain these instincts. Nervousness, cowardice or over-aggressiveness should be discouraged and it should always appear confident.

IMS Trading Group Withdraws Chicken Jerky Dog Treats Due to Drug Residue

January 9, 2013 – IMS Trading Corp has announced it is voluntarily withdrawing its Cadet Brand Chicken Jerky Treat products sold in the United States until further notice.
Cadet Brand Chicken Jerky Treats
The Company is taking this action after learning this week the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets found traces of antibiotic residue in samples of Cadet brand Chicken Jerky Treat products.

Milo's Kitchen Recall

Milo’s Kitchen Recalls Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers Dog Treats

http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-recall/milos-kitchen-chicken-jerky-chicken-grillers-dog-treats-recall/

January 9, 2013 – Milo’s Kitchen today announced it is voluntarily recalling its Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats from retailer shelves nationally.
Milo's Kitchen Chicken Jerky Dog Treats
No other Milo’s Kitchen products are affected.
On Monday, New York State’s Department of Agriculture informed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the company that trace amounts of residual antibiotics had been found in several lots of Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky.
After consultation with the New York Department of Agriculture and the FDA, the company decided to voluntarily recall Milo’s Kitchen Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers, which are both sourced from the same chicken suppliers.
The use of antibiotics to keep chickens healthy and disease-free while raising them is standard practice in poultry production for both human and pet food.
However, the antibiotics found in the products were unapproved and should not be present in the final food product.
Milo’s Kitchen has a comprehensive safety testing program in place for its products from procurement through manufacturing and distribution.
Part of that program involves extensive testing for a wide range of substances commonly used to ensure the health of chickens.
However, Milo’s Kitchen did not test for all of the specific antibiotics found by the New York Department of Agriculture.

Chicken Jerky Treats Recall

Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch Chicken Jerky Treats Recall

http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-recall/waggin-train-chicken-jerky-treats-recall/

January 9, 2013 – Nestlé Purina PetCare Company of St. Louis, MOhas today announced it is voluntarily withdrawing its Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch dog treats sold in the U.S. until further notice.
Waggin Train Chicken Jerky Treats Logo
The company is taking this action after learning this week that the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM) found trace amounts of antibiotic residue in samples of Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch chicken jerky products.
These antibiotics are approved for use in poultry in China and other major countries, but are not among those approved in the U.S.
Antibiotics are commonly used globally – including in the United States – when raising animals fit for human consumption.
According to the company, Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch products are safe to feed as directed.
However, due to regulatory inconsistencies among countries, the presence of antibiotic residue is technically considered an adulteration in the United States.
The company claims this finding does not pose a safety risk to pets.
New York State authorities initially requested that the Company remove Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch chicken jerky treats from retail locations in the state of New York, which we have agreed to do.
In addition, due to the differences in U.S. and Chinese regulations, Nestlé Purina decided to conduct a nationwide voluntary withdrawal.
Nestlé Purina contacted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding NYSDAM’s findings.
There is no indication that the trace amounts of antibiotic residue are linked to the FDA’s ongoing investigation of chicken jerky products. The trace amounts of antibiotic residue (in the parts-per-billion range) do not pose a health or pet safety risk.
No other Purina treats or pet food products are affected by this withdrawal. In addition, Canyon Creek Ranch dog and cat foods, which are manufactured in the United States, are not included in this withdrawal.
